If you already pay for YouTube Premium or would use it, YouTube Music is the better value, because it comes included and you get ad-free video on top. If music is your main reason to pay and you care about playlists, podcasts and social features, Spotify Premium is still the better music app, and its student and household plans are the cheapest legitimate way to get it. Shared seats from resellers like GamsGo cost less again, but both services forbid sharing outside your household.
Here is how the two compare on price, features and the cheapest routes to each, with prices checked at the time of writing (October 2026).
## Prices side by side
Both services raised US prices in 2026. Spotify's increase took effect from February 2026 billing dates; YouTube's from April 2026 for new subscribers and June 2026 for existing ones. Always check the price shown at sign-up, as promotions and local taxes change what you pay.

We could not verify a current 2025 or 2026 rupee price for standalone YouTube Music Premium, so we have left it out. UK and EU readers should compare prices on each service's local page.
**The headline:** in the US, YouTube Music alone is $1 cheaper than Spotify, but for $3 more than Spotify you get YouTube Premium, which includes YouTube Music and ad-free video. In India, Spotify Standard and YouTube Premium are within ₹10 of each other, and YouTube Premium again gives you video as well.
## Which is better for music?
Price is only half the decision. The two apps are built differently.
### Where Spotify is stronger
- **Discovery and playlists.** Spotify's personalised mixes and editorial playlists remain its biggest draw, and most of your friends' shared playlists probably live there.
- **Podcasts and audiobooks.** Spotify is built around podcasts as well as music, and its US Premium page lists an Audiobooks Access option with 15 hours of listening a month.
- **Device support.** Spotify Connect works on a very wide range of speakers, TVs, cars and consoles.
- **Student perks in the US.** Spotify Student includes Hulu, according to Spotify's own page.
### Where YouTube Music is stronger
- **The catalogue beyond official releases.** Live versions, covers, remixes and fan uploads from YouTube are all playable.
- **Bundled value.** If you want ad-free YouTube anyway, Music comes free in the package.
- **Switching between video and audio.** Many tracks let you flip to the music video.

## The cheapest legitimate way to get each
**Spotify:**
1. **Student** at $6.99 in the US or ₹69 in India, if you are at an accredited higher-education institution.
2. **Duo or Family** split with the people you live with. Family at $21.99 for up to six accounts works out to about $3.67 each when full. In India, Platinum at ₹299 for three people is about ₹100 each.
3. **Prepaid annual in India** at ₹1,390, about ₹116 a month, with no auto-renewal.
4. **New-user trials.** Spotify's US page offers a free first month to people who have not tried Premium before.
5. **Spotify Free.** With ads and shuffle limits, but zero cost.
**YouTube Music:**
1. **Get it through YouTube Premium** if you would pay for ad-free video anyway.
2. **Student** YouTube Premium at $8.99 or ₹89.
3. **Family or Two-Person** YouTube Premium within your household.
4. **YouTube Music Premium alone** at $11.99 in the US if you do not care about video.

## The household rules on both services
Both services sell group plans only for people who live together.
[Spotify's household plan terms](https://www.spotify.com/us/legal/premium-promotional-offer-terms/) say Duo and Family members "must be family members residing at the same address", that you will be asked to verify your home address when you activate the plan, that Spotify may ask you to re-verify from time to time, and that Spotify can terminate or suspend access to the household plan immediately if you do not meet the rules.
[YouTube's family plan help page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7507349) says members must live at the same residential address as the family manager, cannot have switched family groups in the last 12 months, and that Premium access is paused if YouTube cannot confirm you are in the same household.
## Where shared seats fit in
Resellers sell single places in these group plans. According to an [August 2026 review by InsideVerdict](https://intercom.help/insideverdict/en/articles/16558646-gamsgo-review-2026-i-tested-it-features-and-pricing), GamsGo's Spotify Premium seats ranged from about $2.30 to $6 a month and its YouTube Premium seats were about $6.49 a month. You can [see GamsGo's current Spotify and YouTube prices](https://gamsgo.sjv.io/vDOOGd); they change with term length and stock.
| Route (US) | Spotify cost/month | YouTube (with Music) cost/month | Within the rules? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual, official | $12.99 | $15.99 | Yes |
| Student, official | $6.99 | $8.99 | Yes, if eligible |
| Family split at home (full plan) | about $3.67 | about $4.50 | Yes |
| Reseller seat (Aug 2026) | about $2.30 to $6 | about $6.49 | No |
So a shared seat saves the most for a single adult with no student status. For a household, a family plan split properly is about as cheap and carries none of the risk.
### What can go wrong with a shared seat
- **Address checks.** Spotify can ask a family member to re-verify their address. A seat in a stranger's family fails that check by design.
- **Loss of Premium overnight.** Spotify's terms say that if the plan owner cancels or the household plan is suspended, all members move to Spotify Free at the end of the billing period. If you used your main account, your playlists survive but your Premium features stop. If the reseller gave you a login to their account instead, your playlists live on an account you do not control.
- **Google account exposure.** For YouTube, your Google account joins someone else's family group. Use a spare account, never the one with your email and photos.
- **Support goes through the reseller.** Our [GamsGo review](/blog/is-gamsgo-legit-shared-subscriptions-explained) explains its refund and warranty rules.
## Who should choose what
**Choose YouTube Premium (with Music)** if you watch YouTube daily and want ad-free video too. It is the best combined value in both the US and India.
**Choose Spotify Premium** if music and podcasts are your priority, you value playlists and discovery, and especially if you qualify for Student or can share Family or Platinum at home.
**Consider a reseller seat** only if you are a single adult with no cheaper legit route, you use a spare account, and you can live with an interruption. In that case, [check the warranty on GamsGo's Spotify listings](https://gamsgo.sjv.io/vDOOGd) before you pay, and prefer listings sold by GamsGo itself over marketplace sellers, which InsideVerdict says attract more complaints. Start with a single month so that, if the seat is cut off, you have lost little and can switch to a legit plan. **Skip it** if your playlists, years of listening history or your main Google account are at stake.
## Our verdict
For most people, paying for both Spotify and YouTube Premium is the real waste. Pick one: YouTube Premium if you value ad-free video, Spotify if music is what you pay for. Then use the student or household route if you can.
If neither discount applies and you want to pay less than the official price, **[compare GamsGo's current Spotify and YouTube Premium seats here](https://gamsgo.sjv.io/vDOOGd)**, start with a one-month term, and keep your main account out of it.
