The cheapest legitimate way to get YouTube Premium in 2026 depends on what you actually use it for. If you mainly want fewer ads on videos, Premium Lite ($8.99 in the US, ₹89 in India) does the job for about half the full price. If you are a student, the Student plan costs the same as Lite and includes everything. If you live with other people, a Family or (in India) Two-Person plan split across your household beats any shared seat on safety and comes close on price.
Below, we lay out every official price we could verify, the legitimate tricks for paying less, and where shared seats from resellers like GamsGo fit in, including the household rule that makes them risky.
## YouTube Premium prices at the time of writing (October 2026)
YouTube raised US prices in April 2026, with existing subscribers moving to the new rates from June 2026. India's current prices were confirmed in a February 2026 report. Prices can change, so check the price shown in your YouTube app before subscribing.

## Every legit way to pay less
### 1. Downgrade to Premium Lite if you do not need music
Lite is the most overlooked saving. In the US it is $8.99 against $15.99 for full Premium, a saving of $7 a month or $84 a year. The trade-off is that Lite does not include YouTube Music benefits and some content, such as music videos, still shows ads. In India, Business Standard reports that Lite gained background play and downloads in February 2026, which makes ₹89 a strong deal if you already pay separately for a music app.
### 2. Use the Student plan while you can
Student is $8.99 in the US and ₹89 in India for the full Premium package, including YouTube Music. Verification is required and has to be renewed, so set a reminder. If you are at university, this is the best value YouTube offers.
### 3. Split a Family or Two-Person plan with your household
In the US, Family at $26.99 split six ways is about $4.50 per person, which is cheaper than most shared seats. In India, Family at ₹299 split six ways is about ₹50 each, and the Two-Person plan at ₹219 is about ₹110 each for a couple. The key word is household: see the rules below.
### 4. Pay annually in the US
The $159.99 annual individual plan works out to about $13.33 a month, saving roughly $32 a year against paying $15.99 monthly. It only makes sense if you are sure you will keep Premium for twelve months.
### 5. Pick the right product: Music Premium vs full Premium
If you only want ad-free music, YouTube Music Premium is $11.99 in the US. But full Premium is only $4 more and includes Music Premium, so most people who want both should buy full Premium, not the two separately. Our [Spotify vs YouTube Music comparison](/blog/spotify-premium-vs-youtube-music-2026) covers whether you need a separate music app at all.
### 6. Watch for trials and bundles
Before you pay full price, open the Premium page while signed in and see whether your account is offered a trial or introductory price. Offers vary by account and country, so it costs nothing to look.
## The household rule you need to know
[YouTube's family plan help page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7507349) is clear. To be a family member you must:
- Live at the same residential address as the family manager.
- Not have switched family groups in the last 12 months.
It also warns that if YouTube cannot confirm you are in the same household, your Premium access will be paused. This is the rule that shared seats from resellers rely on YouTube not enforcing for your particular group.
## Where shared seats come in
Resellers such as GamsGo sell individual places in YouTube Premium family groups. According to an [August 2026 review by InsideVerdict](https://intercom.help/insideverdict/en/articles/16558646-gamsgo-review-2026-i-tested-it-features-and-pricing), GamsGo's YouTube Premium seats were around $6.49 a month at the time, typically delivered as an invite link to an existing group. You can [check GamsGo's current YouTube Premium price](https://gamsgo.sjv.io/vDOOGd), which varies with the term length you choose.
### Official vs shared vs legit-cheaper (US)
| Option | Monthly cost | Full Premium? | Inside YouTube's rules? | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Individual | $15.99 | Yes | Yes | Cost |
| Premium annual | about $13.33 | Yes | Yes | Locked in for 12 months |
| Premium Lite | $8.99 | No music | Yes | Ads on music content |
| Student | $8.99 | Yes | Yes | Must stay eligible |
| Family, split 6 ways at home | about $4.50 each | Yes | Yes | Needs a real household |
| Reseller family seat | about $6.49 (Aug 2026) | Yes | No | Access paused, account flagged |
The table makes the trade-off obvious. For someone with no household to share with and no student status, a reseller seat is roughly $2.50 cheaper than Lite and $9.50 cheaper than full Premium. That is a real saving, but it comes with real risks.
### The risks of a reseller seat
- **It can be paused.** If YouTube's household check flags the group, your access is paused, as the help page says. You then rely on the reseller for a replacement.
- **Your Google account is in someone else's group.** The family manager can see who is in the group. More importantly, it is your Google account (with Gmail, Drive and Photos attached) that joins. Never use your main Google account for this; create a separate one.
- **The 12-month switching lock.** Joining a reseller's family group counts as a switch. If you later want to join your real family's plan, you may have to wait up to a year.
- **Refunds go through the reseller.** GamsGo's [marketplace help article](https://help.gamsgo.com/en/article/marketplace-order-handling-of-request-gamsgo-review-1v0mrb9/) says disputes are only reviewed within the warranty period. Read the warranty on the listing before you pay.
Our [GamsGo review](/blog/is-gamsgo-legit-shared-subscriptions-explained) covers its refund rules and Trustpilot record in detail.
## Who should use which option
**Premium Lite** suits people who want ad-free videos and already have a music app. It is the easiest saving most people can make today.
**Student** suits anyone in higher education. Nothing else matches it for full Premium.
**Family or Two-Person** suits households of two or more. Split fairly, it is the cheapest legitimate full Premium per person.
**Annual** suits US subscribers certain they will keep Premium all year.
**A reseller seat** might suit a single adult with no student status who wants full Premium cheaply, has a spare Google account to use, and can live with interruptions. If that describes you, [look at GamsGo's shortest YouTube Premium term first](https://gamsgo.sjv.io/vDOOGd) rather than paying a year upfront. **It is not for** anyone who would sign in with their main Google account, who might want to join a real family plan within the next year, or who needs it to work every day without fail.
## Our verdict
Most people overpaying for YouTube Premium can fix it legitimately: drop to Lite if you do not use YouTube Music, switch to Student if you qualify, or share Family with the people you live with. Those three moves alone can cut the bill roughly in half without breaking any rules.
If none apply and you still want the lower price, a shared seat is an option as long as you go in with a throwaway Google account and the shortest term. **[Compare GamsGo's YouTube Premium plans here](https://gamsgo.sjv.io/vDOOGd)** and check the warranty before you buy.
