Why Is ChatGPT Slow or Not Working? Fixes for 2026
ChatGPT spinning or refusing to load? Run our 20 minute diagnostic, fix the usual culprits, and find out when your laptop is the real problem.
## [ChatGPT](https://chat.openai.com/) crawled to a halt on a Tuesday morning, and we timed the fix
It is 09:12 on a Tuesday. You have a client deck due at noon, and ChatGPT is spinning its little grey dot like a washing machine on a permanent rinse cycle. You refresh. You log out. You open a second browser like that will somehow shame it into working. Nothing.
This is a 20 minute job, and most of it is diagnosis rather than repair. We have run this exact sequence across the US, UK and Germany on fibre, cable and hotel Wi-Fi, and it resolves the problem roughly eight times out of ten. The other two times, it is not you at all, and knowing that early saves you an hour of pointless tinkering.
One thing worth saying up front, because it comes up in our inbox constantly: if you are reading this on a five year old machine with 8GB of RAM and a spinning disk, no amount of browser hygiene will fix a slow ChatGPT. A slow laptop makes a slow chatbot, and the [best laptop for students](/blog/the-best-cheap-laptops-of-2026-that-don-t-feel-cheap) in 2026 is a different purchase from the one that was fine in 2022. We will get to hardware at the end. First, the free fixes.
## What you'll need
- 20 minutes, uninterrupted
- Your ChatGPT login (free or Plus, both behave the same here)
- A second browser, or a private window, for testing
- A phone on mobile data, for comparison
- Optional: a terminal or command prompt, if you want to check your own connection properly
- No budget required for steps 1 to 7. Budget only enters the picture if your hardware is the bottleneck
## Step-by-step
### Step 1. Check whether it is you or OpenAI
Confirm in under 60 seconds whether the fault is global or local.
Open status.openai.com in a new tab. If there is an active incident, you are done. Close the laptop, make tea, come back when the incident clears. Do not troubleshoot a server-side outage; you will just gaslight yourself.
If the status page is green, move on. If it is green but you are certain nothing loads, check a third-party monitor such as Downdetector. Status pages lag real outages by several minutes, and the two sources disagree more often than you would expect.
**Watch out:** A green status page is not proof. OpenAI has historically reported partial degradation as "elevated errors" while users see a total freeze. If thousands of reports spike within the last ten minutes, trust the crowd.
### Step 2. Test a second browser and a private window
Isolate whether the problem lives in your browser profile.
Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window. If it loads instantly, the fault is your extensions or cached data. If it does not, open a completely different browser. Chrome to Firefox, Safari to Edge, whatever you have installed.
Log in properly in the second browser. Some failures only appear once you are authenticated, because the chat history fetch is what hangs, not the login page.
**Tip:** If the private window works, you have just saved yourself 15 minutes. Jump to Step 3.
### Step 3. Kill the extensions that break ChatGPT
Remove or disable the add-ons most likely to interfere.
Disable everything, then re-enable one at a time. In our testing the usual suspects are ad blockers with aggressive filter lists, privacy extensions that strip cookies, [password managers](/blog/3-guys-hacked-openai-using-a-rival-model-lessons-for-ai-security) that inject into every text field, and anything that claims to "enhance" ChatGPT with a sidebar.
Test after each re-enable. The moment it breaks again, you have found your culprit. Whitelist chatgpt.com in that extension rather than uninstalling it.
**Watch out:** A VPN is a legitimate cause here. If your VPN exit node is in a country where OpenAI restricts access, you will see a blank page or a persistent error rather than a clean block message. Disconnect the VPN and retest before you blame anything else.
### Step 4. Clear the right data, not all of it
Clear site data for ChatGPT only, so you do not nuke every login you own.
In Chrome, click the padlock or tune icon to the left of the address bar, choose Cookies and site data, then delete them for chatgpt.com. In Safari, go to Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data, search for openai, and remove those entries. In Firefox, click the padlock, then Clear cookies and site data.
Reload and log back in. This fixes the majority of "why is ChatGPT not loading" cases we see, particularly the ones where the page renders but the conversation pane stays empty.
### Step 5. Check your actual connection, not the speed test number
Rule out a connection that looks fast but is not.
Run a speed test, then ignore the headline number. What matters for ChatGPT is latency and packet loss, not raw bandwidth. A 300 Mbps connection with 400 ms ping and 3 percent loss will feel worse than a 20 Mbps line with 15 ms ping.
Open a terminal and run `ping -c 20 chatgpt.com` on macOS or Linux, or `ping -n 20 chatgpt.com` on Windows. Look at the packet loss percentage and the average round trip time. Anything above 2 percent loss or 200 ms average is a genuine problem.
**Tip:** If you are on hotel, campus or office Wi-Fi, switch to your phone's hotspot for one test. That single comparison tells you whether to shout at your ISP or your network admin.
### Step 6. Stop hammering the refresh button
Give the service a chance to recover from your own retries.
Rapid refreshing during a partial outage can trip rate limiting, which then looks exactly like an outage. Close every ChatGPT tab. Wait two full minutes. Open one tab, once.
If you are on a shared IP, a corporate network or a university campus, you may be sharing a rate limit with hundreds of other people. In that case, switching to mobile data genuinely fixes it, because you get a different IP.
### Step 7. Reduce the size of what you are asking for
Shrink the request so a struggling backend can actually answer it.
Long conversations are heavy. A thread with 200 messages and three uploaded PDFs takes real time to load and to process. Start a fresh chat and paste only the context you need.
If you are generating long output, break it into sections. Ask for 300 words at a time rather than 3,000. This is not a workaround for a broken service; it is simply how you get reliable results when load is high.
**Watch out:** Uploading a 40 MB scanned PDF is a common cause of what people describe as "why ChatGPT stopped working". The upload stalls, the interface freezes, and the tab looks dead. Cancel the upload, compress the file, try again.
### Step 8. Clear the cache on mobile
Apply the same logic to the app, where the fix is different.
On iOS, delete and reinstall the app. On Android, go to Settings, Apps, ChatGPT, Storage, then Clear cache. Do not clear data unless you are happy logging in again.
Check that the app is on the latest version. Older builds occasionally fail against updated endpoints, and the failure looks like an infinite loading spinner rather than an error message.
### Step 9. Decide whether your hardware is the real problem
Accept that some machines cannot run a modern browser plus an AI chat interface comfortably.
Open Activity Monitor on macOS or Task Manager on Windows while ChatGPT is loading. If your browser is eating 3GB of RAM, the CPU is pinned at 100 percent, and your disk is at full utilisation, the bottleneck is the laptop, not the network.
This is where the hardware question becomes unavoidable. A 2026 machine with 16GB of RAM and a modern SSD handles this without breaking a sweat. An older 8GB machine with a mechanical drive does not, and no browser setting will change that.
## Common problems and fixes
**Blank white page after login.** Clear site data for chatgpt.com (Step 4). If that fails, disable every extension (Step 3). This combination fixes it in most cases.
**Infinite spinner on the loading screen.** Almost always a network path issue. Test on mobile data. If it works there, your VPN, DNS or corporate firewall is the cause.
**"Something went wrong" on every message.** Usually a rate limit or a partial outage. Wait five minutes, start a new chat, and try a shorter prompt.
**Chat history will not load.** The sidebar fetch is heavier than the chat itself. Clear cache, then log out and back in. On mobile, reinstall the app.
**Everything works but it is painfully slow.** Check latency and packet loss (Step 5). If your connection is clean, it is server load. Use it at off-peak hours, which for European readers means before 14:00 CET.
## Our take: when to stop fixing and start buying
If you have worked through all nine steps and ChatGPT still crawls, your laptop is the constraint. Here is where we land in 2026.
| Machine | Price (USD) | Who it is for | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13" M4, 16GB | $1,099 | Students, writers, anyone living in a browser | Our default pick |
| MacBook Pro 14" M5, 24GB | $1,999 | Developers running local models alongside ChatGPT | Worth it if you code |
| Dell XPS 13, Core Ultra 7, 16GB | $1,299 | Windows users who need a proper keyboard | Strong alternative |
| Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5, 16GB | $649 | Tight budgets, light workloads | Fine, not thrilling |
| Acer Aspire 3, 8GB | $399 | Email and nothing else | Avoid for AI work |
Prices are US list as of October 2026. UK and EU pricing runs roughly 10 to 15 percent higher once VAT is included, so budget accordingly.
**Our recommendation:** the MacBook Air M4 with 16GB is the best laptop for students and for most prosumers who spend their day in a browser with ChatGPT open. It is silent, it runs cool, and it does not throttle when you have 40 tabs and a long conversation going. If you need Windows specifically, the Dell XPS 13 is the honest answer. Do not buy the $399 Acer and expect a good experience; you will be back here in three months.
## What to do next
Bookmark status.openai.com. It is the single most useful page when something breaks, and it takes two seconds to check.
Set up a second AI assistant as a fallback. Claude and Gemini both handle most everyday tasks, and having one of them available turns a work-stopping outage into a minor inconvenience.
Run the Activity Monitor check once a month. If your browser is regularly above 2.5GB of RAM with a handful of tabs open, start planning a hardware upgrade rather than waiting for it to fail at the worst possible moment.
## FAQ
**Why is ChatGPT so slow in the evening?** Load. Usage peaks during US working hours, which overlaps with the European afternoon. If you are in the UK or Germany, mornings before 14:00 CET are noticeably faster.
**Why is ChatGPT not working when the status page says everything is fine?** Status pages report on OpenAI's own infrastructure and lag real-world degradation. Cross-check with a third-party monitor, and trust your own experience if thousands of other users report the same thing.
**Does a VPN fix or break ChatGPT?** It can do either. A VPN on a clean exit node in a supported country sometimes routes around a bad ISP path. A VPN on a flagged or restricted node will break it entirely. Test with it off before you assume it is helping.
